A Sustainable America is Just Part of the Games The countdown begins as humanity ascends to the battle field. We donââ¬â¢t want to kill one another, but winning the fight means feeding our families for a year. How did we get to this post-apocalyptic place? If only we had paid attention to the signs of our declining surroundings. While North America has not found, itself subjected to the reaping of the Hunger Games, author Suzanne Collins eludes to this fate in her young-adult, dystopian novel ââ¬Å"The Hunger Gamesâ⬠. As the topic of sustainability becomes widely discussed, the concerns of the state of our planet continues to increase along with the overall well-being and equality of those who inhabit it. Throughout her novel, the writer representsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In understanding the ways in which Collins has demonstrated the negative development of a post-apocalyptic sustainable country, it is vital to understand what the initiative would represent in a posit ive, equal sustainable movement. As author, Christian Weisser states in his work ââ¬Å"Sustainabilityâ⬠, ââ¬Å"[we] may recognize that sustainability has to do with preserving or maintaining resourcesâ⬠, but the true definition ââ¬Å"is the capacity to endure or continueâ⬠(Weisser 3). It is vital to the encouragement of sustainability that resources are maintained for the present and available for the future, and while this concept can be understood economically, factors such as ââ¬Å"social and environmental consequences of human activityâ⬠account for the movement as well (Weisser 5). These factors are the foundation of the ââ¬Å"three pillars of sustainabilityâ⬠(Weisser 5). The ideal sustainability model as the author describes involves: People, Planet and Profit; each pillar prioritizes a different matter in their respected categories (i.e. equality, eradication of poverty, protecting the environment and long-term production and management of reso urces). Yet, throughout ââ¬Å"The Hunger Gamesâ⬠, the model appears to be built to hold one pillar: The Capitol.
